Low Carb Options at Japanese Restaurants

Sushi on a plate

If you’re trying to stick to a low carb diet, but are running into the issue of not knowing what to order when you go out to a restaurant, you’ve come to the right place. At Chiba Japanese Restaurant, we have plenty of low carb options for you, and we’re going to tell you about them right now!

First, let’s talk about what you should avoid when you go to a Japanese restaurant. The first item on the menu that you’ll want to steer clear of is sushi rolls. These items can have as much as 60 grams of carbs in them.

The next thing you’ll want to try and avoid is nigiri sushi. Even though nigiri sushi has significantly fewer carbs than sushi rolls, you’ll still find that you may need to eat a couple of them to fill up. One piece of nigiri sushi has around 8 to 10 grams of carbs.

Don’t worry though, there’s still plenty of items on the menu that are delicious and low carb. One of them being sashimi. Sashimi is mostly protein. It’s made up of raw fish, meat, a good amount of healthy fats, and only has a tiny amount of carbs. To put it into perspective for you, one piece of sashimi on average is around 30 grams. Of those 30 grams, it has between 5 and 8 grams of protein and less than 1 gram of carbs.

Another delicious low carb option at Japanese restaurants is miso soup. Miso soup is made from a stock called dashi, miso paste, and often has seaweed and tofu in it. This soup only has about 5 to 6 grams of carbs in it and is a great starter that will help fill you up.

You could also try dishes that have hibachi meats, seafood, salmon, and veggies in them. These dishes have a lot of protein in them and are low carb. The biggest thing to try and avoid at a Japanese restaurant when on a low carb diet is rice.

You don’t have to worry about going to a Japanese restaurant when you’re on a low carb diet. There are numerous dishes that are not only high in protein and low carb, but delicious for you to have.
